It’s an interesting take on the character, but not exactly loyal to his origins. These can be used to interact with the environment in multiple ways, such as raising green eco crystals, destroy walls, jump great heights, teleport, or slow down time. Jak has new abilities to compensate for lacking his dark eco powers. The flight sections are actually so well controlled and fun to play I was actually dreading the plat forming sections, which weren’t nearly as engaging. The design on them is great, and there’s a number of different things you can do with them.

The main meat of the game comes from being able to upgrade and customize any of five available planes. While the platforming was well put together, it didn’t match the other games in the series, and if I’m honest, I enjoyed the flight sections far more. It has a pseudo open world, allowing you to move from mission to mission. Far better than I thought it actually would.Īlternating between platforming as Jak, flying vehicles and puzzle-solving as Daxter, the game offers enough variation in gameplay that it remains fun. Jak controls surprisingly well on the PSP. While it’s not a game I can see myself returning to multiple times over the years, it’s certainly a game I enjoyed playing. Jak and Daxter: The Final Frontier actually surprised me by the time it had run it’s course.

It’s not exactly loyal to the series as a whole. That being said, the only character who seems to actually follow the established nature of their character in this game is Daxter. It felt so abrupt that they solved the worlds eco problems without much of an actual build up to trying to solve it. The general premise disappears entirely for the third act of the game, and the resolution comes at the final mission. I could immediately tell what the course of the story was going to be. You know – attacked by pirates, pirates are really the good guys, good guys who rescue heroes in the beginning are really the villain – kind of deal, and it’s not subtle in doing this what so ever. The overall story arc is predictable from the start. I honestly don’t understand why Jak can’t transform, as you’d think the same rules would apparently affect him as well. Jak can no longer become Dark Jak – a trademark of the character – and instead, now Daxter can transform. Without spoiling too much, there are some huge inconsistencies. For some reason.īeyond the premise of the story, everything falls apart rather fast. Eco has mysteriously stopped flowing through eco vents around the world, and no one knows why.

This review will only reflect my experiences based on the PSP version of the game. Jak and Daxter: The Final Frontier is a game for the Playstation 2 and PSP, released in 2009. Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier(game I am reviewing) Jak and Daxter and the Precursor Legacyģ. Just so you know here is my order ranking:ġ. Get this one if the price is good but otherwise skip it. I really enjoyed these, too bad there where only 3(?) of them. It does get a little repetitive in the end but is still fun. (even with one of your guns mapped to triangle). I did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did, it was very well done and felt really nice with the PSP's button layout. * See my "series ranking" at the bottom to understand more. Wish the guns powered-up like in Jak III but sadly they don't. The platforming is good but not great, two levels were on-par with something from Jak III* but that was the only level. Using echo powers is a bit clumsy since they are mapped to the D-pad. In Jak II and III, he had all of his moves from Jak I but this one does not(though I think some of them would use buttons the PSP does not have). No better or worse than anything in the series. I don't have enough PSP games to say they are really bad or really good.
